Futures Research Methods in Practice (3/8 cr)
Time
The course will begin during the first week of
November (week 44).
Registration

subject, student number and status (under-/
postgraduate).
Prerequisites
Students should have completed the basic study
course TUTU2: How can we explore the future?
(suom. Miten tutkimme tulevaisuutta?), or a
respective study course, before getting credits
of TUTU3 registered. Students need to have basic
knowledge of futures studies research methods.
Aims and contents
The aim of the course is to explore futures
studies research methods and epistemology of
futures research. Students learn – for example -
about soft systems methodology and scenario
working, and there is a practice about how to
conduct a futures workshop. Additionally, the
aim is to gain deeper understanding of academic
writing and the researcher working process with
both theoretical and practical perspectives.
Academic argumentation is practiced by writing a
Research report, which can be a scientific
article, a project report or a theoretical
analysis.
Modes of learning
Taking actively part in two-days Intensive
session in Tampere April the 6th – 7th is
demanded for both 3 and 8 credits. The course
starts from week 10 (2.3.2010). Performing 8 cr:
there are individual and/ or couple assignments
before and after the Intensive session and the
course ends up in May the 22nd. Performing 3 cr:
there is an individual study session before the
Intensive days and the course ends up in
Intensive days, week 14. Later on, more
information is given about the date of opening
up the Moodle virtual learning surrounding.
