Futures Studies

STUDY PROGRAMME 25 ECTS

Futures studies is a field of knowledge characterized by interdisciplinarity. The aim of Futures studies is to analyze images of the future and distinguish possible, probable and preferred (normative) futures. Futures research in Finland focuses on visionary knowledge regarding alternative futures. Futures research offers results to back up decision-making in public and private organisations. Finland is one of the leading countries in using futures-oriented information in the highest level of decision-making: the Parliament of Finland has the world’s first Committee for the Future, founded in 1993.

Futures studies courses are available for undergraduate and postgraduate students at Finnish member universities of FFA (Finland Futures Academy), including exchange students. The courses can be taken as individual study modules or as a tailored study programme of 25 ECTS credits and include it in a Master’s degree or doctorate studies. Futures courses are based on a blended learning model consisting of learning methods such as collaborative and independent studying, distance education with virtual learning tools and traditional lecturing.
